What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 1

Plan & Preview for Sharing Faith with My Family pages
  • You might want to obtain children's scissors to help your child cut out the beautiful prayer cards on each family page of this unit.

  • Have available a glass bowl or clear container of water. (Sharing Faith with My Family, Chapter 4 Family Page)
Unit 1 presents the children with one of the most profound and comforting aspects of our faith: Jesus Christ is with us always. The children will grow in their understanding that Jesus is the Son of God and is the second Person of the Blessed Trinity who became man. They will learn the major events of Jesus' life on earth and appreciate the fact that Jesus Christ gave us the Church. The children will see themselves as part of a celebrating community of believers. They are part of a community that celebrates its living faith through the seven sacraments and meets Jesus in each of the sacraments. The unit concludes with a chapter devoted to the sacrament of Baptism and a chapter fully describing the sacrament of Confirmation.

What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 2

In this unit, the children will feel Jesus' call to peace and reconciliation. They will grasp more fully the importance of listening to the word of God as found in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Leading from this is a chapter devoted to explaining the Ten Commandments and the Great Commandment. The children will appreciate that true freedom comes from following God's laws. Making bad choices and turning away from God's love is discussed in the context of Jesus' promise to give us his forgiveness. God always loves us and shows us mercy. A large part of this unit (two chapters) is devoted to the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.

What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 3

Unit 3 is all about the Eucharist, presented in ways that second graders can grasp and appreciate. The children will understand that Jesus gave us the gift of himself at the Last Supper. At Mass, we remember what Jesus did at the Last Supper. Thus, the children will perceive the Mass as both a sacrifice and a meal. The rest of the unit details each part of the Mass (the Introductory Rites, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and the Concluding Rite). The various roles of all the participants at Mass are also explained. Emphasis is placed on the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. As we are commissioned at the dismissal of every Mass, the children commit themselves to answering Jesus' call to share God's love with others.

What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 4

Unit 4 focuses on the ways that the children can live out their faith. They are first presented with the vocations of lay people, priests, and religious brothers and sisters. Focus is then directed from naming the local parish, diocese, and bishop to a clearer understanding of the Church throughout the world. The children will become more aware of what prayer is as well as how Jesus prayed. This leads to a presentation of the Our Father and ways we can pray. Unit 4 also offers the children an opportunity to learn more about Mary, the events in her life, her feast days, and the great prayer, Hail Mary. Examples of other saints are given as well as a commentary on feast days and popular devotions. Grade 2 is concluded with an inspiring summary of Jesus' new commandment and the Ten Commandments.
