What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 1
Plan & Preview for Sharing Faith with My Family pages
-
Have scissors, markers, pencils, or pens available for
the activities on the family pages.
-
Pieces of cardboard or stiff paper can be used for the
We Believe Trading Cards. The front and back of the
cards could be glued to the board, forming a sturdy
trading card.
Grade 6 of the We Believe program focuses on the story of God's people
as recorded in the Old Testament, and the fulfillment of God's covenant
in and through Jesus Christ. As Unit 1 begins, the children are presented
with an overview of the books of the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The Book of Genesis is the focus of Unit 1. The children are introduced to
the first story of creation.
The second story of creation is then presented. The children discover that
all human beings are equal in dignity and see what our responsibilities
are as stewards of creation. The children will next hear of God's promise
of a Savior and recognize that Jesus is the Promised One. The children
learn about God's covenant with Abraham and his descendants. They also
will appreciate that God loves his people and calls on each one of us
to trust in him completely.
What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 2
In this unit, the children will be introduced to the development of God's
people. They will read about the enslavement of the Israelites in Egypt,
the Exodus from Egypt under the leadership of Moses, and the journey in
the wilderness of Sinai. The children will learn about the covenant God
makes with his people through Moses, the Ten Commandments, and the
prophecy of the new covenant in Christ. The children will follow the
journey of the Israelites to the promised land of Canaan and their conquest
of the area. The children will study the period of history known as the
time of the Judges and will learn about Deborah and Samson. Through the
story of Ruth, the children will be more aware of the meaning of being
faithful to God.
Unit 2 continues the saga of God's people and their efforts to establish
the nation of Israel. The children read stories about the wisdom of
Solomon and the building of the Temple in Jerusalem. The unit closes
with an examination of the different kinds of psalms in the Book of
Psalms and of the literary style contained in the Song of Songs.
What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 3
In Unit 3, the history of the God's people continues. The children are
introduced to the period of history where the people of Israel are
redefined by geography, religion, and social problems. They learn
about the division of Solomon's empire into two kingdoms. Life in
the Northern Kingdom, now known as Israel, is first examined. Next,
the children learn about life in the Southern Kingdom, known as
Judah. They read about the prophets Isaiah, Micah, Zephaniah, and
Habakkuk. The idea of vocation, a call to serve God, is discussed
in the story of the prophet Jeremiah. Unit 3 continues with the
history and struggles of the divided kingdom, and the eventual
exile to Babylon. The children are introduced to the wisdom
literature of the Bible, for example, the Psalms and Proverbs. The
children learn that the people prosper in exile and later begin a
long journey back to Judah. Unit 3 presents the fulfillment of God's
promise with the coming of the Messiah. The children read about the
Annunciation, Mary and Joseph, and Elizabeth and Zechariah. They
also learn that the Son of God became man. Finally the early life
of Jesus, the preaching of John the Baptist, and John's baptism of
Jesus are presented.
What Your Child Will Learn in Unit 4
The focus of Unit 4 is the life of Jesus Christ and the origins of
the Church. The life of Jesus is examined through the books of the
New Testament. The unit begins with the stories of Jesus as a teacher
and healer. The children will read about Jesus and his disciples,
the Sermon on Mount, the Beatitudes, the apostles, and Jesus' miracles.
The children will come to a fuller understanding of Jesus' teachings
about the Kingdom of God. They will discover the origin of the Our
Father, the prayer that Jesus taught us. The story of Jesus continues
with the events leading up to his death and Resurrection: the Last
Supper, the agony in the garden of Gethsemane, the crucifixion, the
Resurrection. Then children read about the appearances of the risen
Christ to his disciples and apostles, and about Jesus' Ascension.
Unit 4 concludes with a history of the early Church, an overview of
the Church described as one, holy, catholic, and apostolic, and
the ways the Church relates to the world today.
